 The world market for batteries is approximately 50 billion U.S. dollars, of which approximately $ 5.5 billion is allocated to rechargeable (secondary). Lead-acid will account for half of the demand for rechargeable batteries. This battery is used mainly for automotive applications and stand-by. Because of low prices and reliable service under adverse environmental conditions, lead-acid will enjoy a steady increase until the year 2012. Li-ion batteries may begin to take a slight edge on the applications of acid if the price can be lowered and extended life.

Demand for lead battery acid is governed by the production of vehicles. Replacement batteries have decreased as new technologies have extended battery life of 6 months. With the transition to electronic braking and steering by wire in upscale cars, the 3kW capability of the single 12 volt battery will no longer be sufficient to establish the system of 42 volts. Two 12-volt batteries may be the intermediate solution.

Hybrid vehicles require a battery high voltage of about 150V, which is currently provided by connecting nickel-metal-hydride cells in series. The battery manufacturers have been invited to provide 8 to 10-year warranty to ensure that the batteries last for the life of the car. A replacement main battery would cost as much as installing a new motor.Lithium-ion will lead the demand for portable power. The market for nickel-cadmium, on the other hand, is declining. This chemistry will be replaced by nickel-metal hydride. Nickel-cadmium still holds a significant share for power tools, two-way radios and medical devices. This chemistry is preferred over nickel-metal hydride for its high durability and reliable service, but some countries ban its use by 2006 for environmental reasons. An exception will be made if the substitute is unsuitable.

In the absence of major breakthrough, the fuel cell will play an insignificant role in providing power for future applications. Cost, size and performance are the main obstacles. Where will commercial batteries come from?

The battery industry consolidates, competition remains fierce. These companies are gaining ground because of low prices and improving quality.

The price of lithium-ion batteries has dropped 20-50% in recent years. This encourages established battery manufacturers to shift production to lower cost regions like China. Nickel-cadmium and nickel metal hydride batteries are not immune from price declines. Prices have fallen by 10-20%.

The United States and Europe continue to produce specialty batteries, mainly used for defense and industrial applications. Compared to the mass production of batteries from Asia, America and European packs will be more expensive.
